On Saturday the 2nd of June 2007 it was time for the long awaited ‘Elements Of Life’ show by one of the worlds most popular DJ’s: Tiësto. It was for the third year that Tiësto filled the Gelredome stadium in Arnhem in his home country The Netherlands. Over 25.000 people came to see his new show and of course Trance.nu was part of the night as well!
We arrived in Arnhem a few minutes before 22:00 and after parking the car, we went to pick up our press passes, which all was fixed pretty quickly. After putting our coats in a locker, we bumped into Mr. Sam and Alessandro Carusi and Manuel Toso, who are better known as the T4L boys. We had a nice chat with them about the new Mr. Sam mix album ‘Opus’. In the meanwhile many people from the Black Hole crew were running through the area to fix the latest things. We were invited as well for a quick press meeting, which was meant to be for all photographers from different websites, magazines and newspapers. A few minutes before 23:00 the man himself arrived and he was posing for a wall with some ‘Elements Of Life’ tourposters. It was funny to see all the camera’s flashing and one of the photographers even asked Tijs if he still could see something because of all the flashes. Something later the 3 members from the Blue Man Group arrived as well and together with Tiësto they were all posing for the photographers. After the quick photo shoot Tijs left and my friend and I decided to check the main area from the Gelredome.
It was exactly 23:00 when walked in the main area of the Gelredome stadium and at the same time we heard that Jes Brieden was starting with her performance. And what a great warm up for the audience that was! She did several tracks from her new album ‘Jes - Disconnected’, which is out now on Magik Muzik. The highlights for me were her tracks ‘Ghost’, ‘Heaven’ and ‘Around You’, but I think most people really enjoyed ‘As The Rush Comes’, the track which she did with Gabriel & Dresden under the name ‘Motorcycle’ and which became a huge hit world wide. The crowd really loved it and everybody was singing along during ‘As The Rush Comes’. After her performance Jes thanked the audience several times and then we all knew that it was only a matter of time before Tiësto was going to start with his show …
The crowd in the Gelredome
Around 23:45 the lights in the Gelredome stadium all went out and everybody knew that it was time for Tiësto to come on stage any minute! After a nice intro with a dark sounding voice, some cool light and firework effects, Tiësto appeared the DJ booth, which would be his domain for the next couple of hours. Behind him was a huge video wall, which showed several cool animations during the entire night. The show started with the first element: Earth. The track that Tiësto played during the opening of the show, was his own ‘Ten Seconds Before Sunrise’. The crowd was very enthusiastic and everybody was jumping up and down and I noticed a lot of hands in the air as well. After ‘Meck ft. Dino - Feels Like Home (Marco V Remix)’ it was time for the first live performace. Julie Thompson appeared on stage and she did 2 tracks (‘Somewhere Inside’ and ‘Do You Feel Me’). After those 2 tracks, she left the stage, while she got a nice applause from the public.

After ‘Deadmau5 & Glen Morrison - Contact’ I heard the beautiful voice of Maire Brennan, the leadsinger of Chicane. Tijs played the classic ‘Saltwater’ by Chicane! On the screen behind him we noticed some great video things again. That was really cool to see and the voice and music gave me goosebumps! Right after this track I heard him mix in the beats from the track ‘Everything’, so I knew that singer Jes Brieden would be on stage in a bit. And indeed! Jes came on stage to sing the vocals on ‘Everything’. Man, I love that voice! And you could see that she loves to perform for an audience like this!
Jes Brieden performing ‘Everything’
When Jes left the stage, she thanked the audience and she got a big applause in return. Then it ws time for the next element: Air. Tijs started with his track ‘Bright Morningstar’ (a beauty that is co-produced by BT!), which was followed by the great Gabriel & Dresden remix of ‘Read My Mind’ by The Killers. I really like the music by The Killers and I have to say that the more danceable remixes are pretty cool too most of the time! Another rock band followed; Snow Patrol with ‘Open Your Eyes’ in Tiësto’s own remix. This one was followed by another live act on stage. Mr. Christian Burns from the UK, performed the vocals on the latest Tiësto track ‘In The Dark’. What a voice! After Christian Burns Tijs played some cool tracks such as ‘Wamdue Project - King Of My Castle (Sander van Doorn Remix)’, the ‘Airbase’ track ‘Medusa’ by Trance.nu’s very own Jezper Söderlund and Ferry Corsten’s ‘Beautiful’ in the pumping ‘Re:Locate Remix’ that was done by Trance.nu’s Paul Moelands! A new (unknown) ‘First State’ track followed and later he played the brand new ‘Mojado’ track ‘Hijo De Africa’ (from their upcomming album ‘Skizo’ as well.
The maestro behind the decks!
The next element in ths who was Water. During this element we noticed 20 water fountains which got up 16 meters high on the rhythm of the music! They added some light effects on the water bundles as well, which looked amazing! The first track during the water element was the title track from the new Tiësto album; ‘Elements Of Life’. This one was followed by the Giuseppe Ottaviani remix from the Thomas Bronzwaer track ‘Close Horizon’. A few tracks later we noticed that something happened on stage again … The 3 members from The Blue Man Group appeared on stage and together with Tiësto they performed the track ‘No More Heroes’ on stage. They all were carrying some equipment which was producing some smoke and they were making some big blue balloons as well, which were thrown into the public as well. So the balloons were bouncing over the people’s heads later, which was fun to watch!
The Water element
The Blue Man Group live on stage!
The Fire element was the next part during the show. So we were already expecting some cool fire effects and indeed, there were lots of spectacular fire and pyro effects! The Blue Man Group was still there and during the Tiësto track ‘Carpe Noctum’, the three blue boys performed the drums live on stage. When they left the stage we heard Tiësto playing the sweet ‘Doman & Pettigrew’ bootleg version from ‘Red Carpet - Alright’. I love those vocals! When I hear this track it reminds me every time of the summer! Lots of people in the crowd were singing along with the track as well. After ‘Alright’ we were surprised with another live vocalist on stage! This time it was DJ, producer, remixer, songwriter, artist Brian Wayne Transeau a.k.a. BT who appeared on stage! The US based multi talented legend BT did 2 tracks live. First one was ‘Break My Fall’, which is on the new ‘Elements Of Life’ album and the “old” Tiësto hit record ‘Love Comes Again’. You could see that he was enjoying himself on stage! Tijs himself was smiling a lot as well when BT was on stage.
BT performing ‘Break My Fall’
After BT’s performance it was time for some Tiësto tracks and remixes. It was really cool that he played some new ones, but also some older ones. We heard him play some remixes from arists and acts such as ‘Kane’, ‘Moby’, ‘Radiohead’, ‘Conjure One’ and of course he played one of his most famous classical remixes ever: ‘Delerium ft. Sarah McLachlan - Silence (DJ Tiësto In Search Of Sunrise Remix)’. Oh my God! Goosebumps all over during this one! This track is just perfect! Tijs was enjoying himself as well in the DJ booth and it was really cool to see the lasers during ‘Silence’ as well. Also the reaction from the crowd was great to see!
Time for some classics!
Four hours after the start Tiësto still was busy with his extended DJ set in the Gelredome stadium. He played some really cool tracks from ‘Mojado’, ‘Randy Katana’ and ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ from ‘The Prodigy’ in the Richard Durand remix. After that I heard one of my favourites from the moment: ‘Vincent de Moor - Fly Away (Cosmic Gate Remix)’. I think some classics shouldn’t be reworked or remixed, but this one is very good in my opinion. And I think a lot of people agreed with me when I noticed the reactions in the crowd, haha! Later in Tiësto’s set he starteed to play some classics, which was pretty cool! Some examples: ‘M.I.K.E. - Sunrise At Palamos’, ‘Ayla - Ayla’, the ‘Rank 1’ track ‘Airwave’ in the ‘Breaks Dub’ and the great Magikal Remake from the ‘Yahel’ track ‘Open Your Mind’. Tiësto was dancing and smiling again in his DJ booth!
Hands in the air!
Another track that got a massive crowd reaction was ‘Jens - Loops & Tings (Relooped) (Marco V Original Remix)’. Something later I heard some other cool tracks, such as Joni Ljungqvist’s latest production ‘JPL - Your Whole Life’ and ‘Mulika - Escalate’, which is a new track from Cliff Coenraad. It was already 15 minutes after 6 in the morning, but it looked like Tiësto was unstoppable! He played the wonderful ‘The Loves We Lost’ from ‘Allure’ followed by the legendary Tiësto and Ferry Corsten collaboratation ‘Gouryella - Gouryella’. Time for some hands in the air during this classic! And then it was time for the last track from the night, or should I say early morning: ‘Pulser - Cloudwalking (Astral Mix)’.
Party time!
But … it wasn’t time to leave yet! One more track was being played: ‘Jan Johnston - Flesh’ in the DJ Tiësto remix was the very last track of this amazing night! At 6:40 the volume went down and the audience was giving a huge applause to Tiësto. What a show! Lots of cool effects, with water, fire, light, air canons, lasers and of course some brilliant music by the master himself! Personally, I think it was really cool that he ended with some classics, since during those tracks I noticed that the people in the crowd reacted very well on them! I also liked the live acts and special guests that came to join Tiësto on stage. You could see that he liked it himself as well! For the rest I was pretty happy with the MC (MC Strech) as well! He was there, but he was there not “too much”, as some other MC’s who forget sometimes that the people come for the music and the DJ and not for them… I have to say that this was really a great night! For all Tiësto fans that haven’t been to this show, I can advice to put it on your “to-do-list” for sure!
